RAM, or random access memory, is used to store information in the computer about running programs. Running out of RAM can cause your computer to run at decreased performance. Most netbooks offer extra features of one type or another. Asus, for example, sells models of their EEE PC computers with and without webcams. If you need a webcam from Asus, be prepared to pay a little bit more. Other special features include the ability to flip the screen and use the netbook as a tablet, and included bluetooth or extra-fast wireless cards. If these terms don’t mean anything to you, don’t worry because you probably don’t need these features. Sometimes it is possible to add more to your laptop later for a little extra cost as well.

If you’ve used these criteria to narrow down your netbook choices, your final task is to read a few reviews and make sure everything works well with your desired model before you buy it. There is nothing more disappointing than paying for something that is far below your expectations, so shop wisely. In today’s tech market, you can never be too careful with your money.

Time yourself then try to beat that time. After a while, it becomes second nature, and the probability of finding data entry or typing work will be much easier. Efficiency and proficiency in your field will keep you working.

Another profitable way to make money is by writing, editing, and proofreading. This is an ideal work from home job for English majors just getting out of school. Writer’s Weekly and Craigslist.com often advertise work at home jobs that pay well for per diem work.

The most profitable way to make money working from home is as a medical transcriber. Whenever you go to a doctor’s office, the doctor often doesn’t write anything down. Instead, he or she will leave the room and find a tape recorder to record their findings and diagnosis. Your job is to transcribe the information. The recordings are generally sent in an MP3 format via email. However, these jobs require a minimum of one year experience in a medical office and formal training in the field.

Making Music With Your Computer

Computer based home recording studios must include a reasonably powerful computer (with at least 1 GB of RAM), an audio interface, and a digital audio workstation program. If you want to record any kind of acoustic instruments or vocals you will need microphones. For those who interested in using synths, samplers, loops, and drum machines I highly recommend the Reason software. You will also, of course, need some sort of system for listening back to your music. You really should have both speakers and headphones (listen to your music both ways to make sure you have a good mix.)

What kind of computer should you get? Well if you already have a computer that you are happy with then you can likely use the one you already have. But you must make sure it has at least 1 GB of RAM. And in all likelihood you’ll want more than that. I recommend at least 2 GB. Your recording and mixing software will work far better with more RAM.

Should you get a Mac or a PC? In my opinion either option is fine. Most people make too big a deal out of this. Some programs work better with one or the other and while other programs only work with one or the other. So if you have a certain program that you really want to use, make sure it’s compatible with your computer.

What kind of audio interface you get depends on two things: Your needs & your budget. If you only plan on recording yourself then you won’t need more than two inputs (at most.) Unless of course you have a live drum set (it’s good to record drums with many inputs for the different microphones.) But there’s more to consider than just how many inputs you get with your interface, you should also consider sound quality. The more expensive models tend to also have better sound quality. Get what you can afford.

There are a lot of choices as far as digital audio workstation (DAW) software. There’s Pro Tools (which works with the Digidesign audio interfaces.) There’s Cubase. There’s Nuendo. There’s Logic. And there’s quite a few others as well. Which one is right for you? Well first you should know that some of these programs only work with PC (Cakewalk’s SONAR & Sony Acid) or Mac (Logic & Digital Performer.) Bedsides that I think they are all quite similar actually. The important thing is which one you feel most comfortable with. You can download free demo versions to see which one fits you best. There are some general tips about digital audio workstations that I can give: Sony Acid tends to be a good choice for those who do loop based music (like hip hop and techno.) Cubase is a good choice for people on PCs or Macs. Pro Tools is a good choice for those using a Mac but it’s probably not the best choice for those using Windows. It tends to work better on Macs and it’s actually not as full featured as Cubase.

As far as microphones are concerned you will want to buy a condenser microphone for recording vocals and acoustic instruments. With microphones you usually get what you pay for. Better clarity comes from better mics (and better mic preamps but that’s getting a bit too complicated for this article.) Better mics cost more money. Dynamic mics are good for recording drums and amps. I would say they are less essential unless you have a drum set. If you have some good guitar effect plugins (such as Waves GTR 3) then you’ll probably be able to get a good sound plugging your electric guitar (or bass) directly into your audio interface.

Reason is the best all in one solution for those who want a drum machine, a sampler, a synthesizer, and/or a looping program. It’s top quality software that I cannot recommend any higher. If you can afford it and you are interesting in any sort of “synthetic” elements in your music then it’s a must have.

Can Accountants and Bookkeepers Work at Home?

These days there are many possibilities for people wanting to work at home. Just about any job that doesn’t require face to face interaction has the potential to be done from home. Yes, that includes accounting and bookkeeping jobs.

There are a couple ways to find these kinds of jobs.

The first is to look for companies that hire people to do this kind of work at home. Many prefer that you live within a particular geographic region as some parts of the job may require meeting with your clients.

The second is to look for your own clients. Many small businesses would rather hire an individual to handle their bookkeeping and accounting than do it themselves or hire a regular employee for the job.

Most of these jobs will primarily involve filing taxes for businesses. This can make work a bit sporadic, with little peaks for each quarterly filing time and of course the big one getting prepared for April 15.

You don’t need much special equipment. The big question for a work at home accountant is which kinds of software to use. QuickBooks is quite popular but there are other options as well. You will also use spreadsheets as necessary.

Your choices here will sometimes determine which clients you can work with. Some will be set up with a particular software and if you can’t work with that software, they won’t work with you. It is entirely possible that you will decide to buy a couple different software programs so that you can work with just about any client.

Don’t be surprised if you often have to go to your client’s site to pick up paperwork. Not every company will have it all on their computer or they may just not be comfortable sending their proprietary information to you by email.

That of course does lead to the point that you must make your customers comfortable with your ability to keep their proprietary information safe. If you can have a completely separate room for your office and a computer that is used only for work, so much the better for your clients.

While you’re working at home, don’t assume that you will have it too easy. If you have children you will need to figure out how to work around their needs. You’ll have to keep yourself on task and figure out your best working hours. You’ll even need to figure out how to deal with the busier times of year when you may not have the time you’d like for your family.

Know What Sweet Spot Clients(tm) Mean to Your Business.  The “not too small” but “not too big” concept is what defines Sweet Spot Clients(tm).  It’s where you will find companies with anywhere from 10-100 employees, with 10-50 PC’s and annual revenues between $1 million – $20 million (USD).  This is where many computer business owners find their best opportunities for significant growth.

3. Very Small Businesses Are Not Ideal Clients.  When you work with small businesses that have just a handful of PC’s, they are often too small to afford many of your recommendations.  While this type of business is still technically defined as a small business, you will find that marketing to or servicing a very small company will usually not be profitable.  These types of businesses will not be able to afford on-going support and will ultimately not be able to grow past being an occasional customer.  The turning point for a small business is when it needs services on a monthly, semi-monthly, or even weekly basis… and it must invest in at least one real, dedicated server.

4. Very Large Small Businesses Do Not Make the Best Computer Business Clients Either.  When you have large small businesses with 50+ systems as your clients and they start seeing you on a weekly or even daily basis, they often will have a light-bulb moment:  “We could really save money and get faster service if we hired a full-time IT manager.”  While there still might be a place for your computer business in this type of environment as a specialist, this size of small business will end up delegating most work to a full-time IT manager on their payroll.  

When it comes to the profitability of specific small business clients, remember that not all small businesses are created equal.  You need to target the right type of clients to make sure you can build long-term relationships and enjoy on-going service revenue.

PC Troubleshooting Advice

Most computer problems can be easily taken care of before you end up calling a computer technician.  Sometimes a simple reboot is all it takes to fix a slow pc or other computer problems.

While most small businesses really do need to find a good local computer consulting business to take care of their computer problems, there are some computer problems that are simple enough for even a technophobe to handle. At Computer Consulting 101, we’ve found there’s one very simple piece of advice that often doesn’t get communicated to non-technical small business end users: When in doubt, reboot first.

Seriously, while it may sound tremendously simple, end users often overlook it during typical computer panic attacks.

Anytime you’re about to consider an issue a real IT support problem and call your computer consulting vendor, always reboot first.

First, exit out of whatever files and programs that you’re working on. Then, run through a Shutdown and Restart sequence to reboot your computer.

If you suspect your computer problem involves something hardware-related, such as with your network card, modem, mouse, keyboard or sound card, you should even go one step further, before calling your computer consulting experts.

Go to your Start menu. Next, shutdown your PC. Then turn the power off for a minute or so… if you’re computer didn’t power itself off on its own. Then finally power your PC back up again and see if the problem resolved itself on its own. Many times a simple reboot is all it takes.

The Bottom Line

While this advice probably sounds very basic, at Computer Consulting 101 we’ve found that a substantial percentage (as many as 10-20% of problems) of trouble calls for IT support become unnecessary after a reboot. And of course, because you probably pay every single time you pick up the phone, why not conserve your IT budget for those projects that can help your company drive more revenue, improve productivity, reduce overhead, and boost your bottom line. Remember, before you call a computer consulting professional, reboot first…. so you can conserve your computer consulting budget for those problems that really require expert assistance.
